Frequently Asked Questions
The laser delivers short pulses of energy that target and break tattoo ink into tiny particles without significantly damaging the surrounding skin. Your body’s immune system then gradually clears these particles away, causing the tattoo to fade after each treatment until it is significantly faded or completely removed.
Your technician will clean and prepare the area, provide protective eyewear, and carefully pass the laser over your tattoo. You’ll feel a series of quick, hot snapping sensations as the laser pulses over the ink. Cooling is used to help keep you comfortable throughout the treatment. Most sessions are very quick—smaller tattoos can take only a few minutes, while larger tattoos may take 15–20 minutes or longer.
Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, but treatments are usually very quick. Most clients describe the sensation as a series of quick, hot snaps against the skin. We use advanced cooling throughout the treatment to reduce discomfort and make the experience as comfortable as possible.
Immediately after treatment, the tattoo may temporarily appear white or “frosted,” while the surrounding skin may be red, swollen and feel warm or tender. The frosting typically disappears within minutes, while redness and swelling gradually settle over the following days. Some blistering or scabbing may also occur as the area heals. Your technician will cool and protect the treated area and provide you with aftercare instructions before you leave.
Every tattoo is different, but most tattoos require multiple treatments for complete removal. The total number depends on factors such as the tattoo’s age, location, colours, ink density and depth, as well as how your body responds to treatment. During your consultation, we’ll assess your tattoo and provide a personalized treatment plan and estimated number of sessions.
You may notice some fading after your first treatment, but the most noticeable results develop gradually over the following weeks as your body clears the fragmented ink. With each treatment, the tattoo should progressively become lighter, with results varying depending on the tattoo and how your body responds.
Laser tattoo removal can safely and effectively treat a wide range of skin tones. However, darker skin contains more melanin, which can also absorb laser energy and increase the risk of burns or changes in pigmentation. Darker skin types therefore require careful laser selection and treatment settings. During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin type and tattoo to determine the safest and most effective treatment approach.
Yes. Laser tattoo removal is a safe and well-established treatment when performed by a trained professional using the appropriate laser and settings for your tattoo and skin type. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or blistering can occur after treatment, while more serious complications such as scarring or permanent pigment changes are uncommon when proper treatment protocols and aftercare are followed.
If you only need a touch up or require minor fading, paying per session might be best. But if your goal is complete tattoo removal, our Unlimited Removal Package is usually the best value. Instead of paying for each treatment individually or worrying about how many sessions you may need, you’ll have a complete treatment plan designed to take you through the removal process. With affordable monthly payments, you can start your removal now and spread the cost out over time.
If you’re planning a cover-up, our Fading Packages include up to 6 treatments and are designed to lighten your existing tattoo just enough to give our artists more flexibility and achieve a better cover-up. We also offer special discounts when you combine a Fading Package with a cover-up tattoo booking at Heartless Ink.
Laser tattoo removal is generally very safe when performed correctly, but some temporary redness, swelling, blistering or changes in pigmentation can occur as the skin heals. Permanent scarring is uncommon when appropriate laser settings and proper aftercare are used. We carefully assess your skin and tattoo before treatment and adjust our approach to minimize risks and protect the surrounding skin.
Keep the treated area clean, dry and protected while it heals. Avoid picking, scratching or popping any blisters, and avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas and excessive heat until the skin has healed. Protect the area from direct sun exposure and use SPF 30+ once the skin has healed. Your technician will provide detailed aftercare instructions and may recommend specific aftercare products designed to support the healing process and keep your skin properly cared for between treatments.
We use an advanced Pico laser specifically designed for tattoo removal, featuring some of the newest and most advanced technology available for laser tattoo removal. Unlike older laser systems, Pico technology delivers ultra-short pulses of energy that break tattoo ink into extremely small particles while minimizing heat exposure to the surrounding skin. With multiple wavelengths, we can effectively target a wide range of ink colours and customize each treatment based on your tattoo and skin type.
Yes. Many types of permanent make-up (PMU), microblading and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can be successfully removed or significantly faded with laser treatments. However, cosmetic pigments can react differently than traditional tattoo ink, and some may temporarily darken when treated. We’ll assess the pigment, colour and treatment area—and perform a test spot when appropriate—to determine the safest and most effective approach.
Yes. Most colour tattoos can be significantly faded or completely removed. Different ink colours absorb different wavelengths of laser energy, so some colours respond more easily than others. Black and darker inks are generally the easiest to remove, while certain lighter colours may require additional treatments. During your consultation, we’ll assess the colours in your tattoo and determine the best treatment approach.
Laser tattoo removal treatments are surprisingly quick. Most sessions take approximately 5–20 minutes, depending on the size, location and complexity of the tattoo. Smaller tattoos may take only a few minutes, while larger tattoos require more time.
Most clients experience redness, swelling and tenderness for the first few days, while the skin typically takes about 1–2 weeks to fully heal. Blistering or scabbing can sometimes occur and may take a little longer to resolve. Following proper aftercare will help support the healing process and reduce the risk of complications.
Yes. Once the treated area has fully healed, you can safely tattoo over it. If you’re fading an existing tattoo for a cover-up, we’ll work with you to determine when the skin is ready and how much fading is needed to give your artist the best possible canvas for your new tattoo.
There are other methods of tattoo removal, including surgical excision, but they are generally more invasive and can result in scarring. For most tattoos, laser treatment is the preferred method for safely fading or removing tattoo ink. If you don’t want to remove the tattoo completely, a professionally designed cover-up may also be an option—and laser fading can make it possible to achieve a much better cover-up result.
